A 19-year-old woman woke in her own bedroom to find Tiago Damasceno Sousa leaning over her with a knife. Over two hours he repeatedly raped her, forced oral sex, filmed parts of the attack and threatened to kill her family. Gardaí later found his bags packed and a Brazil flight booked for the next day.

The attack

At about 7am on 29 March 2024, Sousa entered the woman’s bedroom, covered her mouth, held a knife and threatened her and her parents. He repeatedly penetrated her, compelled oral sex, struck her and recorded sexual activity and intimate images. He used Google Translate during the ordeal and repeatedly apologised.

He told her not to disclose what happened until he was back in Brazil. She reported the crime that morning. Sousa entered custody the same day and later pleaded guilty. Ms Justice Siobhán Lankford adopted a twelve-year headline, reduced it for the plea and suspended one year, producing nine effective years.

The documented flight risk

Gardaí found packed luggage and a flight to Brazil booked for the following day, with a return one month later. That is not proof of an escape attempt. It is objective evidence that a serious suspect could have left before an investigation developed. Ireland avoided an international pursuit because the victim reported immediately.

Prior and immigration record

The court was told Sousa had no previous convictions. He was a Brazilian former professional footballer who had lived and worked in West Cork for roughly 18 to 20 months. Sources do not disclose his permission, exact entry date or whether a deportation assessment has begun.

This is not a case of a known conviction missed at the border. The accountability issue begins after conviction: whether immigration planning will conclude before eventual release.
