Two Jordanian international-protection applicants, reported as aged 25 and 27, are accused of raping and falsely imprisoning an 18-year-old woman in a car at Galway’s Ceannt Railway Station. Both were refused High Court bail and remained in custody at the latest verified hearing.
The charges reported so far
Both men are reported as facing charges of vaginal rape and false imprisonment. The older defendant also faces a further rape charge alleging oral penetration. On 21 September, Galway District Court was told that DPP directions were at hand and that further charges connected to the same alleged 1 August incident were to be put later that week. The public report did not give their full particulars.
The 25-year-old also faces a separate allegation concerning the theft of a black gear bag and contents valued at €450 from a Galway pub. RTÉ reported that the DPP consented to summary disposal of that matter and that it was adjourned to the end of November. It is a separate allegation and is not evidence of guilt in the sexual-offence case.
The prosecution and defence accounts
The court reporting says the woman had become separated from friends and was trying to find her accommodation when the two men offered help. The prosecution alleges that she repeatedly refused sexual activity and could not leave the car because a door was locked. Medical findings and CCTV were outlined during the bail hearing.
Both defendants maintained that sexual activity was consensual. The older man denied the alleged oral activity. Neither man gave evidence at the High Court bail hearing. This file records the competing accounts without deciding credibility.
Reported migration background
The High Court was told that both men were from Jordan, arrived in Belfast and entered the State in 2024 before applying for international protection. The older man was reported as having all his family in Jordan. The younger man had family in Ireland, and relatives offered a €1,000 surety.
The younger defendant’s defence referred to a marriage. Garda evidence accepted that he was in a relationship but disputed that the ceremony created a marriage legally recognised in Ireland. None of this establishes the outcome of either protection application or proves unlawful presence.
Why bail was refused
Detective Sergeant Trevor Shannon opposed bail on flight-risk grounds. Ms Justice Caroline Biggs agreed that the men were likely to leave the jurisdiction and refused both High Court applications on 10 September. The court also expressly noted the presumption of innocence. A bail ruling is not a verdict.
The date conflict in the published record
The 7 September Irish Times report and the 21 September RTÉ update place the alleged incident on 1 August 2026. A 10 September Irish Times report instead says 1 August 2025, while the syndicated court report contains a further unexplained reference to a complaint on 3 April. The latest procedural reporting supports 2026, but no primary court record has been obtained to formally resolve the conflict.

Cost status
No taxpayer-cost estimate is supportable. The men were reported in custody, but no sentence exists and the public sources do not provide the complete remand dates needed for a defensible custody calculation. Investigation, prosecution, interpretation, legal aid and accommodation costs are not published on a case-specific basis. Unknown is not zero, but it is not permission to invent a total.
