Romanian national Marius Lacatus followed a woman walking to work, attacked her from behind, dragged her into a quiet Dublin park, sexually assaulted her and threatened to kill her. He pleaded guilty. The sentencing court also heard that he had robbery and domestic-violence convictions in Romania.

The early-morning attack

Shortly after 6am on 19 August 2024, the woman was walking to work in Dublin. Lacatus came from behind, put an arm around her neck, dragged her to a secluded place in a park, held her down, put his hand inside her underwear and threatened to kill her.

Her screams attracted another young woman, who raised the alarm and went to her aid. Lacatus fled. Gardaí found him nearby hiding beneath a bridge. He was too intoxicated to be interviewed for a period and later said he could not remember the incident.

Bail ordered but never taken up

At his first District Court appearance on 20 August, Gardaí opposed bail on seriousness, evidence and flight-risk grounds. The judge set conditional bail requiring a €500 bond, €3,000 independent surety, passport surrender, residence, contact and curfew conditions.

At the return hearing on 27 August the surety had not been approved, so Lacatus had not taken up bail and remained in custody. The final sentencing report said he had been in custody since arrest. It would therefore be wrong to report that the conditional order resulted in his release.

What he admitted and the sentence

Lacatus pleaded guilty to sexual assault and making threats to kill or cause serious harm. The original assault-causing-harm charge is not presented as a conviction, and the adjudicated sexual offence is not upgraded to rape or attempted rape.

The court heard that he came to Ireland in 2021 and worked in cleaning and construction. It was also told of previous Romanian convictions for robbery and domestic violence, but not their dates, precise statutes, sentences or total count.

On 25 July 2025 Judge Martin Nolan selected an eight-year headline term, describing the attack as sudden, unexpected and serious and saying intoxication was no excuse. The guilty plea, remorse, impoverished background and work history reduced the sentence to five-and-a-half years.
