Ionut Cosmin Nicholescu was working as a Cork chef while secretly occupying a derelict house. He murdered 64-year-old Frankie Dunne there, dismembered his body after death and concealed the remains. Nicholescu reported for work, appeared at the scene, then travelled through Belfast and Edinburgh to Bucharest. Extradition brought him back; a unanimous jury rejected his story about two imaginary armed men.
The murder of Frankie Dunne
Nicholescu, a Romanian national, worked at a nearby restaurant and occupied an upstairs room in the boarded-up Castlegreine House on Boreenmanna Road. Frankie Dunne, a father of three living in supported accommodation, disappeared on 27 December 2019.
The court found that Nicholescu bludgeoned Mr Dunne with a bottle and strangled him. His head and arms were removed after death and the remains concealed in bushes, where a neighbour searching for a cat found them the next day.
The rejected account and flight
Nicholescu claimed two armed unknown men killed Mr Dunne and forced him to move the remains. Prosecutors described them as phantom men. The jury unanimously rejected the account after almost eight hours of deliberation.
On 30 December 2019, Nicholescu travelled by bus to Belfast, onward to Edinburgh and then flew to Bucharest. He contacted the investigation from Romania to deny involvement and was later interviewed there in the presence of Irish investigators.
European Arrest Warrant and appeal
Nicholescu was taken into Romanian custody under an Irish European Arrest Warrant on 8 November 2021 and extradited to Dublin in December. On 31 March 2023, the Central Criminal Court jury convicted him of murder. Mr Justice Paul McDermott imposed mandatory life, backdated to the Romanian custody date.
A sentencing report said he had no previous convictions. Although counsel initially indicated he accepted the verdict and would not appeal, Nicholescu lodged a conviction appeal on 19 May 2023. The latest located public update, from March 2025, showed the appeal still active. No final appellate judgment, transfer or removal process was located.
