Ik Joo Kang flew from Hong Kong to Ireland days before Gardaí found him in a Dublin hotel room holding more than €1.05 million in cash. The wider operation recovered €1,283,935 and targeted an organised criminal group.
The cash trail to a hotel
On 7 August 2025, the Dublin Crime Response Team stopped a rented Skoda in Donnybrook and found €197,760. A map on a phone in the car pointed to the Hilton Hotel at Charlemont Square, while an incoming message asked whether €180,000 had been handed to an Asian man.
Gardaí went to the hotel and found Kang and a co-accused. A search of their shared room uncovered more than €1.05 million in cash spread across suitcases, tables and the floor. Another €27,500 was recovered from a short-term apartment connected through keys seized during the operation.
The total cash seizure reached €1,283,935.
Arrival, admissions and conviction
Kang, a South Korean national, had arrived on a flight from Hong Kong several days earlier, although Garda evidence also indicated he had travelled to Ireland before. He said a friend asked him to come and that he expected payment for helping.
Kang admitted his role and pleaded guilty to possessing proceeds of criminal conduct. The sentencing judge found that he was trusted and actively counted the money. His early plea, admissions, remorse, lack of previous convictions and lesser role were treated as mitigation.
On 30 April 2026, Judge Orla Crowe reduced a ten-year headline sentence to seven years, backdated to his time in custody and allowing credit for time served. Kang had complied with High Court bail after release in December.

Kang’s lawyers said he intended to leave Ireland after sentence. That stated intention is not a removal order, deportation decision or verified transfer plan.
